Upstream Author: R.H. Herron

front cover of Stolen Things by R.H. HerronIntroducing Booksmith's newest Upstream author: R.H. Herron!

R.H. Herron can often be found skulking around the Mills campus, where she got her MFA two decades ago. She likes to swim in the pool and then write in the library (using all the books she never cracked when she was a student), and she sneaks tea bags into the tea shop where she steals all the hot water a writer needs. On days when the writing is going well, she imagines being recognized. "Why, yes, I am Rachael Herron, alumna and mediocre swimmer." On bad days, she keeps her head down and just keeps writing the books she loves to pen. Eventually she plans on being "that weird old lady with the purple hair" to twenty-somethings on campus.

She's written more than two dozen books, some of which have been bestsellers, others which have been very politely received by family and friends. She teaches in the extension programs at Cal and Stanford, a natural rivalry that she enjoys. (Berkeley is closer to where she lives in Oakland. Stanford has prettier grassy fields.) Her favorite thing in the world, after writing The End, is watching someone else write it for the very first time.

R.H. Herron author photoHer new thriller, Stolen Things, is loosely based on real events that occurred during the time she was a 911 dispatcher. She maintains that working 911 is one of the best ways for writers to get ideas. Even now that she doesn't wear the headset, in the middle of the night, she can still hear her callers' panic over abandoned vehicles left to sit on public streets like so much rotting meat. (For real. A shooting, a stabbing, whatever. What's really upsetting to upper and middle-class citizens is selfish parking.)

Writing is the best job she's ever had.

Upstream, for the uninitiated, is our ongoing (and ever-growing) effort to partner with local authors to provide an unending supply of signed books available for purchase—without events, lines, or hassle. Order and enjoy.
