From the author of Badass and creator of badassoftheweek.com, a name-taking, face-stomping guide to the most epic heroes who never existed!

Does your copy of The Iliad still have drool marks from when you used it as a desk pillow in high school?  Have you ever envisioned a literal blood bath? Are you curious about who won a battle between a ghost bear berserker and an army of Viking Zombies? If the Aztec Sun-God asked you, would you find Him a freshly excavated heart?

Professional badass expert Ben Thompson knows that the answer to these questions is Yes! Which is why, for his own pleasure, he’s going to force-feed you his new book, BADASS: THE BIRTH OF A LEGEND, one monster-killing, skull-popping page at a time.

Skipping over all the boring parts where no one gets maimed, Ben retells the stories of Anubis, Beowulf, Captain Kirk, and every super-epic imaginary hero in between. The major players are there in full force, including Darth Vader, the most abusive father in cinema history; Moby-Dick, hull-smashing emperor of Sea World; and Zeus, the god with lightning skills so impressive he could dress up like a swan and still get laid. Likewise, Thompson is careful not to exclude lesser-known hell-raisers, like El Chupacabra, Puerto Rico’s vomit-loving answer to the Loch Ness Monster; Baba Yaga, the evil Russian witch who saved money on stilts by standing her house on chicken legs; and Huitzilopochtli, the heart-devouring destroyer of spelling-bees.

If you want an in-depth exploration of the thematic repercussions of the heroic legend on Western Literature, go suck your thumb at the library. If you want a lesson in ass-kicking, baby-juggling, zombie-pirate killing mayhem, then BADASS: THE BIRTH OF A LEGEND is for you.

Ben Thompson has run the warhammer of a website badassoftheweek.com since 2004, and has written humorous history-related columns for outlets such as Cracked, Fangoria, Penthouse, and the American Mustache Institute.  Even though he has never flown a jetpack over the Atlantic Ocean or punched someone so hard his head exploded, Thompson is still considered by many to be the foremost expert on badassitude.  His first book, Badass, has already melted faces across America.

THOMAS DENMARK, who contributed many illustrations to Badass, will accompany Ben this evening.  Thomas is a San Francisco artist who fell in love with drawing when his mom complimented his crayon scribbles once, not realizing that all moms are obligated to do that. He works full time as an artist at Big Point and occasionally does illustrations in his little free time between work and family
